Air-to-water heat pump water heaters operate by extracting heat from the surrounding air and transferring it to water stored in a tank. This process leverages the basic principles of refrigeration but in reverse. Unlike conventional electric water heaters that convert electrical energy directly into heat, heat pumps move heat from one place to another, making them far more efficient.

The system includes an outdoor or indoor air intake, a compressor, evaporator and condenser coils, a refrigerant circuit, and a water storage tank. Warm air passes over the evaporator coil, where refrigerant absorbs the heat. The refrigerant is compressed, increasing its temperature, then transfers heat to the water in the tank via the condenser coil. This method requires less electricity since it’s primarily moving existing heat rather than generating it from scratch. Because of this heat transfer method, air-to-water heat pump water heaters can achieve a Coefficient of Performance (COP) ranging from 3 to 5. This means for every unit of electricity consumed, the system produces 3 to 5 units of heat energy. Such efficiency can lead to substantial reductions in energy bills compared to traditional water heating systems.
