According to yogic philosophy, the human body functions through five vital airs, known as Pancha Vayus. These types of air in our body according to yoga are responsible for energy circulation, digestion, movement, and overall well-being. The five vayus are Prana Vayu, Apana Vayu, Samana Vayu, Udana Vayu, and Vyana Vayu. Each of these has a unique function and must be in balance to maintain physical and mental health.
Prana Vayu is the primary life force situated in the chest, responsible for inhalation, oxygen intake, and energy absorption. It fuels the heart and lungs and is vital for mental clarity and focus. Apana Vayu moves downward, controlling elimination, excretion, and reproductive functions. Located in the lower abdomen, it plays a key role in detoxification. Samana Vayu, centered in the navel region, is essential for digestion and nutrient absorption. It ensures proper metabolic function and maintains digestive fire (Agni).
